Vision Training or Vision Therapy is a series of guided activities and exercises for the eyes to help visual problems which cannot be solved with glasses alone. Vision therapy helps develop all of the visual skills that are necessary for reading and learning, which makes academic progress more efficient. The training is done twice each week in the office and supplemented with activities at home during the week. Each child has an individual set of activities and schedule to help with their specific needs. The therapy works to help improve eye alignment, focusing, eye movements used in reading, and visual processing skills.
Vision Therapy helps children develop normal coordination and teamwork of the two eyes (binocular vision). When the two eyes fail to work together as an efficient team, performance in many areas can suffer (reading, sports, depth perception, eye contact, etc.).
Vision Therapy programs offer much higher success rates for turned eyes and/or lazy eye when compared to eye surgery, glasses, and/or patching, without therapy. The earlier the patient receives vision therapy the better, however, research has shown successful treatment of patients well into young adulthood.
